Interim Rector Joining in MarchFebruary 20, 2025 We wish Fr. Andrew much joy as he completes his time with CHS and continues as a Supply Priest in New Jersey. We welcome Fr. Matthey Engleby, who will join us in mid-March as our Interim Rector, and we will share more details at that time. Fr. Matt has been an ordained Episcopal priest for over 30 years and graduated from The General Theological Seminary in New York. He was the Rector at St. John on the Mountain in Bernardsville for a decade and was the Executive Director for El Hogar Projects in Honduras, a non- profit educational organization, for ten years. More recently he has been the Interim Rector at Christ Church San Marcos in Tarrytown, NY. Fr. Matt will bring many new gifts to CHS through his experience as a parish rector and in working with congregations who are exploring their life in Christ while preparing for a new rector. Vestry Meeting UpdateThe Vestry met on Thursday February 20th, and we would like to share some highlights.
We reviewed recent successes including the January 26 th Annual Meeting, where we shaped the meeting so we can share relevant information with the parish, specifically the financial gap we face in 2025. Other successes include a January 22 nd Orientation Session for new vestry members and a two-day Vestry Workshop to identify our focus for 2025 (February 1 st and 8 th ). We discussed a new administrative approach to managing vestry meetings and minutes. To use vestry meeting time more efficiently, members will share ministry status prior to the meeting, and we will focus meetings on action items. Despite inviting eight parishioners to serve, we have not found a recording secretary, consequently we will rotate the responsibility of minute taking within the vestry and a sign-up sheet was circulated. The Parochial Report was completed by Sally Bird, Eva Lesniak and Diane Hrozencik. It was approved by the vestry and is due to the Diocese on March 1st . The Vestry discussed upcoming events including the Winter Thaw Potluck (2/22), the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper (3/4), the new Lenten Book Study (begins 3/12), and the Good Friday Day of Service. Our focus was to shape the events and expand opportunities for parishioners to volunteer at these activities. Fr. Andrew shared that his contract ends on March 7th he feels it is time for him to move on, adding that there is great need for supply priests in New Jersey. The vestry thanked him for his service to CHS during this time of transition. His last Sunday at CHS is March 2nd and he will also be presiding at the Ash Wednesday Service on March 5th. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Diane Hrozencik or Gary Scott. The Vestry met on Thursday, January 16, and we want to share some highlights

The Vestry met on Thursday, December 19, and we want to share some highlights from that meeting: 1. We reviewed recent successes:
3. Sally Bird reported on the annual audit conducted by Oscar Jones, CPA, who is a member of the Finance Committee. 4. The Vestry confirmed that the church’s 2024 Marks of Mission contribution to the Diocese of New Jersey would remain at $35,000. The Diocese requested $39,249, but the Vestry, upon the recommendation of the Finance Committee, decided to not increase our original commitment due, in part, to, a distortion in the three year formula used by the Diocese that included the federal Covid-related Payroll Protection Program loan received by the church in 2021 in income for purposes of the Marks of Mission calculation. 5. The Vestry approved, upon the recommendation of the Endowment Committee, the transfer of $3,418.73 to the Diocesan Investment Trust (“DIT”) for the church’s Endowment Fund and $35,800 to the DIT for the Fr. Philip Carr-Jones Fund for CHS Facility Restoration sub fund of the Endowment Fund. The $35,800 is made up of $7,400 from the Service Auction, $10,500 designated donations and a matching gift of $17,900. 6. Eva Lesniak reported on the upgrade of the fire alarm system. 7. Plans for the We 3 Kings Epiphany House Blessings were discussed. 8. The Vestry discussed plans for the Parish’s Annual Meeting, which will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact John Andrews or Diane Hrozencik. The Vestry met on Thursday, November 21, and we want to share some highlights from that meeting:

The Vestry and Finance Committee of CHS work tirelessly to ensure that we are faithful stewards of the funds that are entrusted to us. It became apparent that three major renovations/upgrades needed to be completed to our facility to keep it safe and in good repair. First, a new roof was needed over “Dove Hall” due to several leaks and the age and condition of the roof. Next, our fire alarm system is out of date and we need to upgrade this system to keep the church protected in case of a fire. Lastly, the entrance to the church near the memorial garden floods with any major rain storm or snow melt. This needs to be repaired to ensure the safety of those entering our building. The total cost of these projects is close to $50,000. The Diocese offers a loan assistance program to churches at a rate of 4%. We opted for a term of 10 years, with no penalty to pay it back early. Why not use our savings account instead? Again, as good stewards, we feel it is important to keep about 4 months of our monthly expenses in reserve (as many of us are advised to do in our personal finances). The rate on the Diocesan loan is close to the rate we are making in our savings account. It made good fiscal sense to apply for the loan. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or either of the wardens. Sally Bird Treasurer [email protected] The Parish Profile is now on the CHS website. This is our first step in the process of hiring a new Rector.
The Profile provides interested candidates with an overview of our congregation and parish. Advertising for the position of Rector will start shortly. Many thanks to the Search Committee for their hard work on this! Vestry Meeting Highlights from September 19, 2024 Meeting
We reviewed recent successes:
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact John Andrews or Diane Hrozencik. ![]() Dear Family and Friends of CHS, On behalf of the Vestry, we are very pleased to announce that Fr. Andrew Calandriello has been called to become the Interim Rector of the Church of the Holy Spirit. Fr. Andrew was a Roman Catholic priest from 1975 to 1980. He then had a 32-year career in marine insurance claims management with several major insurance companies. After retiring from the insurance business, he felt God calling him back to active ministry. He became a parishioner at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New Providence, NJ. With the encouragement of the Rector at St. Andrew’s, he became active in the parish and eventually met with Bishop Chip Stokes, who encouraged him to become a priest in the Episcopal Church. Fr. Andrew’s Holy Orders were received into the Episcopal Church on September 20, 2020. Since then, he has been serving as a supply priest in the Diocese of New Jersey. During our search for an Interim Rector, Bishop Sally French presented Fr. Andrew to us as a candidate for the position. Fr. Philip Carr-Jones, who as Dean of the Watchung Convocation has gotten to know Fr. Andrew, encouraged him to seek the position. Fr. Andrew will be serving as Interim Rector on a part time basis. He will work an average of 20 hours per week. In addition to preparing for and officiating at Sunday services, he will maintain office hours one day per week. He is committed to providing pastoral care, including accompanying LEVs on their visits to home-bound parishioners. He will attend Bible Study, Theology on Tap, and our social events. He will also assist in developing Formation programs for adults and our youth. He will attend Vestry meetings in his capacity as Interim Rector. Fr. Andrew’s extensive experience as a manager and administrator will also be helpful to us.
Fr. Andrew resides in Watchung with his wife, Mary Caterson. He has two adult sons and three grandchildren. He enjoys reading, listening to music, cooking, and rooting for the New York Yankees. Fr. Andrew looks forward to leading our parish through this period of transition and his comments are enclosed with this letter. We are excited to have Fr. Andrew join us. Please join us in welcoming him. Sincerely, John T. Andrews, Jr. Diane F. Hrozencik Senior Warden Junior Warden |
