Welcome, Mother Kim!

Picture
Dear Siblings in Christ,

My name is The Rev. Kimberly Reinholz (Mother Kim). I have the honor of being called as your fifth rector of the Church of the Holy Spirit. In the years to come, we will pray, grow, and dream, pursuing the knowledge and love of God together. I am hopeful and excited for what the Holy Spirit has in store for us.

My family eagerly looks forward to joining you in September. My husband, The Rev. Andrew Reinholz, has also been called as the rector of St Mark’s, Basking Ridge, and we will live there in the rectory. Our kids, Audrey, age 11, and Owen, age 8, will come from Pitman, where we have lived and learned for the past three years.

As a community organizer, teacher, missioner, and priest, I developed skills that enable me to listen for the Spirit in community, assess available resources, teach essential skills, and approach ministry sustainably. Most recently, I have employed these skills as the interim priest at St. John’s in Salem, NJ. As this relationship comes to an end, I look forward to embarking on this journey with CHS, which will begin by learning about you through prayer, reflection, and community conversations. As we learn about one another and God together, it will become clear where the world's deep hunger meets the shared passion of those who call CHS home.

The search committee and vestry both highlighted formation as a concern for the parish, which is also a passion of mine. I am mindful that no one from the nursery to the nursing home is an empty vessel as God blessed humankind with memory, reason, and skill; it everyone in a community has something to learn and something to teach. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how folks are formed as Christians, but we will find ways to grow in our knowledge and love of God together.

The primary purpose of a church is worship. When the liturgy is accessible and understandable (as much as we can understand a Holy Mystery), it becomes foundational to a faith that continually grows, adapts, and expands with our knowledge and love of God, for all ages. CHS’s physical plant and approach to liturgy are already open and welcoming, and this will continue to be a touchstone in our common ministry as well.

The Church is one of the rare places in society where people interact across societal divides —age, income, gender, etc. —all people are included and essential to the body of Christ. The diversity of creation is reflected in the inclusion of as many people as possible in worship and formation. By gathering in worship, the work of the people (the liturgy) and the mystery of God’s works (the sacrament) are more fully reflective of the love that God has for all of Creation.

It will be my joy to be with you all in the years to come. Learning to love and be loved by God is Christ’s call to all of us, and CHS is already a beloved place. I am deeply grateful for the work and love that God has poured into this community, and I look forward to building on the strong foundation you have already laid.

When I arrive, I will work with the wardens and vestry to share more information about myself with you all, and I will meet with folks in person as soon as we have settled in.

Yours in Christ,
Mother Kim Reinholz
