Ilya Yakushev concert: Pictures at an Exhibition In- Date: Monday, September 16, 2024 Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm Location: Headquarters Library Main Meeting Room, Headquarters Library Audience: Adults,Teens Pianist Ilya Yakushev, with many awards and honors to his credit, continues to astound and mesmerize audiences at major venues on three continents. For this concert, he will be performing works from Mozart, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, and Beethoven's Piano Sonata no. 14 "Moonlight". In the second half, he is going to mix music with a visual experience of seeing works which Mussorgsky composed Pictures to. Ilya has performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (New York); Davies Symphony Hall (San Francisco); Glinka Philharmonic Hall in his native St. Petersburg, Russia; Victoria Hall (Singapore); and Sejong Performing Arts Center (Seoul, South Korea), among countless others. Flyer attached > How Civil Disobedience Led to Women’s Ordination , September 17In recognition of the 50 th anniversary of the ordination of women in the Episcopal church (July 1974), CHS is hosting a viewing of the documentary, The Philadelphia Eleven, on Tuesday, September 17, from 7 – 9 PM , in the church sanctuary. Following the 90 - minute film, the Rev Elizabeth Wigg - Maxwell will provide commentary, followed by a Q&A. The Philadelphia Eleven are the first women ordained as priests in the Episcopal Church, 2 years before General Convention affirmed and explicitly authorized the ordination of women to the priesthood . From the documentary’s website:In an act akin to civil disobedience, a group of women and their supporters organize their ordination to become Episcopal priests in 1974. The Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia welcomes them, but change is no small task. The women are harassed, threatened and banned from stepping on church property.In this feature - length documentary film, we meet the women who challenge the very essence of patriarchy within Christendom and succeed in building a movement that transforms an age - old institution. The documentary is rated PG - 13. As we have done many times in the past, we will be leading tour groups through the Convent and educating the public about our historically significant, 1915 French Eclectic architectural treasure. The last tour begins at 4 PM. Event closes at 5 PM. Admission is $30 and includes one free appraisal of an antique per ticket holder. Antiques to be appraised must be small enough for one person to carry. Appraisals of additional items will be $10. Please note that the tour involves quite a lot of stairs and is not wheelchair accessible.
