Spring Concert: Rachmaninoff Vespers
Over two weeks in the winter of 1915, the great Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff composed what many consider to be one of his finest works, the All-Night Vigil, an unaccompanied work for choir which served as a summa of the Russian Orthodox tradition to that point, that would soon be suppressed by the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Vigil is an unforgettable mountaintop experience for singers and audience, awash in the chants and luxurious harmonies of the Russian church. In our Spring Concert, the Bach Choir performs it for the first time in our history, along with the talented singers of the Westminster Choir, the flagship ensemble of Westminster Choir College, in a first-ever collaboration between two titans of the American choral landscape. Soloists mezzo-soprano Luthien Brackett and tenor Steven Brennfleck will be joined by Glenn Miller, an incomparable basso profundo, who, with the 130 voices of the combined choirs, will offer a universe of vocal sonorities in this absolutely not-to-be missed performance of some of the most moving and transporting music ever written. |
