Dear Parents of Students Ready for Communion Class,
It is a great joy to prepare your child to receive or to learn about the wonderful gift of the Holy Eucharist. We are using a lovely book called We Celebrate. This is a course typically used by another denomination for their First Communion Class. The information taught in We Celebrate is precisely how we would describe the Sacrament in the Episcopal/Anglican tradition with only a few minor adjustments. Since we follow the more ancient custom of offering Holy Communion to all baptized persons, regardless of age, we do not call this course First Communion. It is a time to pause in our early Christian development and explore and learn about the Rite we already practice. We also honor the choice of parents who decide to have their child wait until this time, so for them it will truly be a first.
There are nine sessions in the book. We will teach SEVEN on six Tuesdays at 4:00 pm with Father Carr-Jones and TWO sessions are to be done with parents at home. If sessions are missed on Tuesdays, it is expected that parents will spend the time with their child making these up. The sessions normally take 45 + minutes to accomplish. The text we use is very suitable and easy for parents to teach. A parent workbook is also provided.
Faith, though a gift from God, is something we learn through the lives of others. We ask that you become an effective teacher at this very important point in your child's faith development. To assist you, I have found a valuable resource in the We Celebrate the Eucharist Family Guide book. The teaching will be fun, and you get to ask any question you ever had about our sacramental worship.
The scheduling leads us to our December 16th Sunday celebration. At this time, the children will be in Church and there will be a special ceremony for them. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me as soon as possible.
Rev. Philip Carr-Jones
