“I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me water. I was naked and you clothed me. I was cold and you took me in. These people you have helped today-all the time you were helping them, you were helping me!” Papa Panov, adapted by Leo Tolstoy
Beginning with our extended Advent season, children and youth will be learning about Advent and Christmas through the story of Papa Panov. Papa Panov’s Special Christmas is a French folktale originally written by Ruben Sailles and adapted by Leo Tolstoy. It is a classic tale of an old shoemaker seeking Jesus on Christmas day. The story demonstrates the virtues of kindness and is centered on the Bible verse Matthew 25:35. To read a version of this heartwarming tale visit http://americanliterature.com/author/leo-tolstoy/short-story/papa-panovs-special-christmas.
In addition to hearing the story, we will learn how CHS members bring the story alive in our time and will create and participate in a dramatization of Papa Panov to share with the congregation. Additionally, we will make our own contributions through weekly outreach projects related to the story.
More information about the drama our young people will perform is available, and any assistance to lead them through this process during the seven Sundays of our expanded Advent is welcome. There are many ways both large and small to contribute your time and talent. For more information, contact Michelle Marlow at 908-884-6932; firstname.lastname@example.org or speak to Father Phil, Deacon Dot or another vestry member.
